Israel Vows Maintaining Presence in Southern Syria

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that his nation’s armed forces will not retreat from territories they currently control in southern Syria.

Addressing a conference with Israeli ambassadors, heads of missions, and Foreign Ministry officials, Netanyahu reaffirmed that Israel has no intention of vacating areas seized after the collapse of the Baath regime in Syria on Dec. 8, 2024.

"We want to preserve these assets," he emphasized, referring specifically to Jabal al-Sheikh (Mount Hermon) and the buffer zone next to the Israeli-held Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied since 1967.

Netanyahu also mentioned that Israel hopes to negotiate an arrangement with the Damascus government to demilitarize southern Syria.

Following the fall of the 61-year Baath regime on Dec. 8, 2024, Israeli military operations in Syria increased, particularly after clashes that intensified on Nov. 27.

Israel began targeting military installations left behind by regime forces and expanded its control over parts of the Syrian Golan Heights.

Israeli troops moved into the buffer zone near the Golan Heights, extending their occupation and advancing to a distance of roughly 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) from Damascus.

Israel has maintained control over Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967. A 1974 disengagement pact between Israel and Syria defined the borders of the buffer and demilitarized areas.
